Sundara Kanda Chapter 1

The first chapter of Sundara Kanda begins with the scene of Hanuman,
standing on Mahendra Hill and getting ready to cross the ocean. This
first chapter of Sundara Kanda describes Hanuma's preparations to
cross the ocean in search of Seetha. Mighty Hanuma's flight over the
ocean is described in a glorious detail. Hanuma's encountering of
Mainaka, Surasa and Simhika form important phases of His flight.
Tato raavaNaniitaayaaH siitaayaaH shatrukarshanaH |
iyeshha padamanveshhTuM chaaraNaacharite pathi ||5-1-1
1. tataH = after that, shatrukarshanaH = the destroyer of foes
(Hanuma), iyeshha = desired to (travel in), pathi = the path,
chaaraNaa charite = tread by chaaranas, anveshhTum = to search for,
siithayaaH padam = Seetha's place, raavaNa niitaayaaH = taken away by
Ravana.
After that, Hanuma, the destroyer of foes, desired to travel in the
sky where celestials like chaaranas tread, to search for Seetha, who
was taken away by Ravana.
One who chants at least this verse (shloka) every day with
unfathomable belief will be liberated from all bonds. All the
incurable diseases will be cured.

Twelth letter of Gayathri Manthra – `Va' is inscribed in this verse.

This verse reveals the secret about a Guru, who after getting the nod
from the God and the ring belonging to God, is preparing to go in
search of Jivas who are separated from the God.
Hanuma is described in this verse as "Shatrukarshana" – meaning of
shatrukarshana is destroyer of foes. Hanuma is capable of destroying
all the demons who are troubling mother Sita. Hence the term is
suitable to him.
Similarly the Guru also should be a Shatrukarshana. DESIRE is the
enemy which stops all of us from reaching the God. The one who wins
over the desire is GURU.

Bhagwat Geeta describes the enemy as – JAHI SHATRUM MAHABAHO
KAMARUPAM DURASADAM" - Krishna advices Arjuna to kill the enemy
called DESIRE, which can not be controlled otherwise.

There are three enemies for reaching the goal of self realization
(probably God Realization). Thery are –
1. Thinking that we are independent,
2. we can save ourselves and others also, and
3. working in the path of God Realization with a desire to get
benefits in this mundane world.

The Guru is one who wins over all the above three enemies. Guru is the
one who believes that he/she belongs to God; God can only save
him/her; and what ever he/she does is for the happiness of God. Only
such persons can cross the ocean and reach the Lanka and see the
mother Sita. The truth that Hanuma has one over all the above
mentioned enemies will be known as we go further into Sundara Kanda.

The Sankalpa (determination) of such a Guru is the protection (raksha)
of his disciples. To indicate this determination of Guru, Valmiki has
used the word IYESHA (desired to travel). It is said that the Guru's
determination to protect and prevent us getting further deep into this
bhavasaagara is more powerful than the determination of God.

Hanuma has decided (and determined to) cross the ocean in search of Sita.

Guru also searches for such a disciple who has the qualities and
eligibility to receive a place at lotus feet of God.

"Path" means the path or the place or the identity. Hanuma has desired
to locate the place where mother Sita is being taken by Ravana. Guru
desires to test the qualities of his disciples.

The word `Sita' in this verse indicates the Jiva. Janaka has got
Sita in the agricultural field while ploughing. When we discharge all
our duties (ploughing the life) without desire (of fruits of the
Karma), our micro consciousness leads us in the path of God
Realization and locates the ATMAN in the materialistic body (the Karma
Kshetra).

The word SITA is feminine. The Atman or Jiva which belongs to God is
also feminine.

raavaNa niitaayaaH = taken away by Ravana.
Sita has been taken by Ravana. Our egoistic intelligence which brings
out the word `I' and `Mine' is Ravana. The ego binds the Jiva in the body.
The Philosophical meaning:
Tato= from the God (in Sanskrit, the word `ta' indicates GOD); raavaNa
niitaayaaH = the one taken by egoistic and desirous mind; siithayaaH=
the one which is bonded in the body and one which can be realized by
micro consciouness – the Atman which has no birth or death and which
belongs to God; Patham = the identity of being desirous to reach God;
Anveshtum= in search of; Shatrukarshana= the one who has conquered
over mundane desires; Charanacharite= the celestial path in which the
ancient sages have lead their life; Path = direction; iyesha = desred
to travel.

Here Hanuma has decided to travel in the sky where celestials like
chaaranas tread. We need to understand the meaning of this.

Guru also should travel in the path of Chaaranaas. Chaaranaas means
ancient sages and gurus. The path taken by them is the celestial path
(ChaaranaCharitam). Shaastras (ancient literature) should be
interpreted based on the way their lead their lives. The Upanishads
say that the path taken by those who follow Dharma should be taken by
all.

Traveling in celestial path means having the Brahma Nishta. HANUMA
traveled through sky. The word AKASHA (SKY) means Prabrahma.

A= all pervading
Kash= illuminating

AKASH= Prabrahma

The one who travels in AKASH can only cross this bhavasaagara and also
can lead others to safely cross the bhavasaagara and reach the goal.

Thus this verse describes the Guru who can lead the Jivas in the right
path.

If we consider SUNDARA KANDA as a PRABHANDA, in this Hanuma appears
as a SADHAKA and indicates us ways and means to be assimilated to
reach the God's abode. A saadhaka should discharge his duties without
asking anything in return, should be self realized and should be able
to recognize others who are in the path of self realization, should
get rid of all those which prevent him / her from reaching the God
Realization and ultimately reach the goal of God Realization. HANUMA
has crossed the ocean without thinking of his personal benefit,
sincerely searched for mother Sita and located her, killed the demons,
and comes back and reaches the God.

Hanumma appears here as those illustrious sages who with the
blessings of God receives HIS message and searches for the Jivas who
are aspiring to reach his abode, removes the obstacles of achieving
the goal, gives them the right wisdom, and finally gives the
information of such jives to God.

Thus Hanuma appears here as Saadhaka, Sage, and Rama's Messenger.

In the first chapter of Sundara Kanda, the word DUSHKARAM (impossible
to do) can be seen four times. Infact, reading this second verse
itself is difficult. This verse contains composite letters like
`shkra', `shpra', and `rsha' in between the words which makes it
difficult read for a normal reader. Valmiki has indicated the
difficulties involved in accomplishing (or completing) the task Hanuma
desired to do by using such sounds which are difficult to pronounce.

The words that Valmiki used to describe the monkeys indicates towards
the Guru.

`Kapih', `Vaanarah', `Shaakamrigah', and `Hari' are the four words
that indicate a Jnani (person with wisdom).

Kapih: Kam=Parabrahma (God), Pibathi=one who enjoys. Kapih= the one
who has the knowledge of god or one who is always with spiritual joy
Vaanarah: Vaah Narah – the one who is having powers different than
normal human beings, appear as if like a human being.
Shaakahmrigah: Shaakah= in the branches of Vedas. Mrigah=one who
searches the spiritual knowledge.
Hari: Harathi=(S)HE who destroys all the obstacles that prevents one
reaching the God.

The Guru having such qualities as decribed by above words appears here
as HANUMA. The desire of Hanuma to cross such a big ocean of 100 miles
without stopping in between the journey itself is a difficult task. It
is an impossible task otherwise. Similarly, it is difficult to cross
this bhavasaagara without facing difficulties. It requires a strong
determination and capacity to come over the difficulties that come in
the journey. One who can accomplish will shine as a bull (GAVAAM
PATIH IVA). Bull is capable of going ahead with its task by
destroying what ever comes in its way. Hanuma is standing on the
Mahendra Hills with such a determination.
A guru or any saadhaka (one who is in the path of self or god
realization) should be in thoughts of the God (should relentlessly be
in meditation and chant the name of God) and in fact should become one
with HIM.

GAVAAM PATIH = Hanuma is shining like a GOD (on the Hills like a
GOD / GURU).

With such a determination,

Verse 3

atha vaiDuuryavarNeshhu shaadvaleshhu mahaabalaH |
dhiiraH salilakalpeshhu vichchaara yathaasukham ||5-1-3

atha = after that, mahaabalaH = the mighty one, dhiiraH = the
courageous one, vichachaara = roamed about, yathaa sukham = at ease,
shaadvaleshhu = on the lawns, vaiDuura varNeshhu = with the hue of an
emerald, salilakalpeshhu = and same as (still) water (from a distance).
After that, the mighty and courageous Hanuma roamed at ease on the
lawns with the hue of an emerald, which looked like still water from a
distance.

The lawns that appears `pleasant' are the mundane desires. Hanuma,
inspite of being in such a pleasant atmosphere, is determined to move
forward and was looking ahead into the sky (AAKAAASH). One who desired
to lead his /her life in spiritual path should be with such
determination and should always be in the thoughts of GOD.
`DhiiraH' and `yathaasukham' are the t wo words which indicates a
secret meaning here. DHIIH = in the knowledge of GOD, RA= one who
enjoys (one who enjoys in the name of GOD is Dhiirah). To walk in
pleasant lawns one doesn't require any courage. The word `DhiiraH' is
used in this verse to indicate that Hanuma is walking in such pleasant
lawns without getting distracted from his meditative mood. This
indicates that all those who desire to walk in the path of self
realization should not get distracted by the mundane pleasures and be
always in the thoughts of God.

4. dvijaan vitraasayan dhiimaanurasaa paadapaan haran |
mR^igaaMshcha subaahunnighnan pravR^iddha iva kesarii|| 5-1-4

The thoughtful Hanuma tread like a rampant lion, making birds fear,
uprooting trees by his breast and also killing many animals.

kaamaruupibhiraavishhTamabhiikshNaM saparichchhidaiH |

sa tasya girivaryasya tale naagavaraayute |
tishhThan kapivarastatra hrade naaga ivaababhau ||5-1-7

That great monkey Hanuma shone like an elephant in a lake, standing on
the foot of that great mountain by the name of Mahendra, where many
elephants of good breed resided, which was beautifully decorated with
many naturally formed mineral rocks of varied hue like black, white,
red, blue, yellow and green and which was surrounded by godly serpents
and Yakshas, Kinnaras, Gandharvas who were capable of assuming desired
form, together with their families.

sa suuryaaya mahendraaya pavanaaya svayaMbhuve |
bhuutebhyashchaaJNjaliM kR^itvaa chakaara gamane matim || 5-1-8

He saluted with joined palms to the Sun-God, Lord Indra, God of Wind,
Lord Brahma and Bhutas and decided to leave.

aJNjaliM praaN^mukhaH kR^itvaa pavanaayaatmayoonayo |
tato hi vavR^idhe gantuM dakshiNo dakshiNaaM dishm || 5-1-9

Hanuma turned towards east, saluted his father, the Lord of Wind and
increased his body to go towards southern direction.

plavaN^gapravarairdR^ishhTaH plavane kR^itanishchayaH |
vavR^idhe raamavR^iddhyartham samudra iva parvasu || 5-1-10

With all the Vaanaras seeing, Hanuma decided to fly and like an ocean
swelling on full moon days, grew for Rama's success.

nishhpramaaNashariiraH san lilaN^ghayishhurarNavam |
baahubhyaaM piiDayaamaasa charaNaabhyaaM cha parvatam || 5-1-11

With a desire to cross the ocean, Hanuma grew his body immeasurably
and pressed the mountain with his feet and hands.

sa chachaalaachalashchaapi muhuurtaM kapipiiDitaH |
taruuNaaM pushhpitaagraaNaaM sarvaM pushhpamashaatayat || 5-1-12

Thus tormented by Hanuma, that mountain shook for an instant and
showered all flowers of trees on it.
13
tena paadapamuktena pushhpaughena sugandhinaa |
sarvataH saMvR^itaH shailo babhau pushhpamayo yathaa ||5-1-13

Covered all through by those fragrant flowers which fell down from the
trees, that mountain shone like a mountain made of flowers.

tena chottamaviiryeNa piiDyamaanaH sa parvataH |
salilaM saMprasusraava madaM matta iva dvipaH ||5-1-14

That mountain shed water like an elephant in rut emitting rut juice,
after being pressed by the mighty Hanuma.

piiDyamaanastu balinaa mahendrastena parvataH |
riitiirnirvartayaamaasa kaaJNchanaaJNjanaraajatiiH ||5-1-15

Pressed by that mighty Hanuma, streaks of gold silver and antimony
color appeared on the Mahendra mountain.

mumocha cha shilaaH shailo vishaalaaH samanaHshilaaH |
madhyamenaarchishhaa jushhTo dhuumaraajiirivaanalaH ||5-1-16

Huge Rocks of Sulfur were also shot forth from that mountain, just as
a fire burning with a medium flame would emit columns of smoke.

giriNaa piiDyamaanena piiDyamaanaani sarvashH |
guhaavishhTaani bhuutaani vinedurvikR^itaiH svaraiH ||5-1-17

Being pressed on all sides by the mountain which itself was being
pressed by Hanuma, creatures living in the caves of that mountain
shrieked in horrifying tones.

sa mahaasattvasaMnaadaH shailapiiDaanimittajaH |
pR^ithiviiM puurayaamaasa dishashchopavanaani cha ||5-1-18

That loud noise from creatures which emanated because of stress caused
to the mountain, filled the earth and all four directions and forests
near that mountain.

shirobhiH pR^ithubhiH sarpaa vyaktasvastikalakshaNaiH |
vamantaH paavakaM ghoraM dadaMshurdashanaiH shilaaH ||5-1-19

Great snakes with clear swastika signs on their hoods, spewed out
frightening flames with their great heads and bit the rocks with their
teeth.

taastadaa savishhairdashhTaaH kupitaistairmahaashilaaH|
jajjvaluH paavakoddiiptaa bibhidushcha sahasradhaa ||5-1-20

Then those great rocks bit by those snakes with anger and venom,
burned due to the flame and split into thousand pieces.

yaani chaushhadhajaalaani tasmin jaataani parvate |
vishhaghnaanyapi naagaanaaM na shekuH shamituM vishham|| 5-1-21

Medicinal herbs from that mountain, although capable of destroying
ordinary poisons, could not neutralize the poison from those snakes.

bhidyate.ayaM girirbhuutairiti mattvaa tapasvinaH |
trastaa vidyaadharaastasmaadutpetuH striigaNaiH saha|| 5-1-22
paanabhuumigataM hitvaa haimamaasavabhaajanam |
paatraNi cha mahaarhaaNi karakaaMshcha hiraNmayaan ||5-1-23
lehyaanuchchaavachaan bhakshyaan maaMsaani vividhaani cha |
aarshhabhaaNi cha charmaaNi khaDgaaMshcha kanakatsaruun || 5-1-24

Ascetics residing on that mountain flew away from there thinking that
some demons were destroying it. Vidhyadharas who lived there, became
afraid and flew away with their women folk, leaving behind them golden
jugs of wine in the liquor house, gold vases, a varieties of sauces
that can be licked, eatables, various meats, skins of oxen and swords
with golden hilts.

rktakshaaH pushhkaraakshaashcha gaganaM pratipedire ||5-1-25

The intoxicated Vidyadharas with garlands around their neck, decked
with red flower garlands and smeared with sandal paste, with reddened
eyes, and with lotus shaped eyes, obtained the sky.

haaranuupurakeyuurapaarihaaryadharaaH striyaH |
vismitaaH sasmitaastasthuraakaashe ramaNaiH saha ||5-1-26

Vidyadhara women wearing necklaces, anklets, armlets and bangles stood
in the sky with surprise and with smiles along with their loved ones.

darshayanto mahaavidyaaM vidyaadharamaharshhayaH |
sahitaastasthuraakaashe viikshaaJNchakrushcha parvatam|| 5-1-27

Vidyadharas and great sages stood in the sky in a group, showing their
great prowess and viewed the mountain.
28
shushruvushchatadaa shabdamR^ishhiiNaaM bhaavitaatmanaam|
chaaraNaanaaM cha siddhaanaaM sthitaanaaMvimale.ambare|| 5-1-28
Then they heard words of Charanas, Siddhas and pure hearted Rishis who
were located in that clear sky.
29
eshha parvatasaMkaasho hanuumaan maarutaatmajaH |
titiirshhati mahaavegaH samudraM makaraalayam ||5-1-29

"This Hanuma, who is equal to a mountain, who is the son of Vayu, and
who has great speed, wants to cross the ocean which is abode to
crocodiles."
30
raamaarthaM vaanaraarthaM cha chikiirshhan karmadushhkaram |
samudrasya paraM paaraM dushhpraapaM praaptumichchhati|| 5-1-30

"Hanuma has decided to perform an impossible task for the sake of Rama
and Vanaras and wants to obtain the other side of ocean which is hard
to obtain."

Hanuma is not performing this act for his personal pleasure. Great
sages perform their act for the pleasure of God (raamartham)or for the
welfare of the universe (vaanarartham).

iti vidyaadharaaH shrutvaa vachasteshhaaM mahaatmanaam |
tamaprameyaM dadR^ishuH parvate vaanararshhabham ||5-1-31

Vidyadharas thus listened to the words of those great people and
looked at the incomparable Hanuma, best among Vanaras, standing on the
mountain.
32
dudhuve cha sa romaaNi chakampe chaachalopamaH |
nanaada sumahaanaadaM sumahaaniva toyadaH || 5-1-32

He, who is equal to a mountain, shook his hair, quivered his body and
let out a great roar like from a vast cloud.
33
aanupuurvyeNa vR^ittaM cha laaN^guulaM lomabhishchitam |
utpatishhyan vichikshepa pakshiraaja ivoragam ||5-1-33

About to fly, Hanuma jolted his tail, which was rolled into a circle
from top to bottom, and which was covered with hair, just as Garuda,
the king of birds would jolt a snake.
34
tasya laaN^guulamaaviddhamaattavegasya pR^ishhThataH |
dadR^ishe garuDeneva hriyamaaNo mahoragaH || 5-1-34

Receiving his vigor, the tail curled at his back was seen like a great
serpent being stolen by Garuda.
35
baahuu saMstaMbhayaamaasa mahaaparighasaMnibhau |
sasaada cha kapiH kTyaaM charaNau saMchukocha cha ||5-1-35

Hanuma firmly supported his arms (on the mountain surface) which
resembled huge iron clubs, crouched the waist and contracted his feet.
36
saMhR^itya cha bhujau shriimaaMstathaiva cha shirodharaam |
tejaH sttvaM tathaa viiryamaavivesha sa viiryavaan ||5-1-36

Bending shoulders and neck, that mighty and glorious Hanuma, increased
his energy, strength and courage.

Let us see the philosophical meaning of these.

Hanuma desired that the saadhakas, should conquer over the mundane
desires, realize the self and the realize the God. He is standing on
the Mahendra mountain. The saadhaka should start his path of self
realization after knowing that the body and the self (aatman) are
different. Realizing that the body and aatman are different is
indicated by hanuman standing on the mountain.

Scriptures (shaastras) indicates that before starting any activity one
should perform the Sandhyaavandanam.

Sandhyaaheenah ashychih nityam anrhah sarva karmasu

The one who does not perform the sandhyaavandanam is not eligible for
the daily routines.

To indicate that Hanuma performed the sandhyaavandanam, he bowed to
Sun God, Lord Indra and god of wind.

After sandhyaavandanam, one should perform the yoga. This involves the
controlling of the activities of our Indriyas. The activities of
Hanuma – straightening of his arms, movement of eyes, enlarging his
shoulders and ears etc., indicates the need to control the indriyas in
order to complete such a mission.

For the people who perform yoga, Praanayama is another important step.

37. maargamaalokayanduuraaduurdhvaM praNihitekshaNaH |
rurodha hR^idaye praaNaanaakaashamavalokayan || 5-1-37
uurdhvam praNihitekshaNaH = With eyes raised up, aalokayan = seeing,
maargam = the way, dooraat = from a distance, avalokayan = viewing,
aakaasham = the sky, rurodha = (he) held, praaNaan = breath, hR^idaye
= in heart.

With his eyes raised up, seeing the way from a distance, viewing the
sky, he held his breath in his heart.
rurodha hR^idaye praaNaan uurdhvam praNihiteshana - indicates
fixing of eyes in between eye brows and controlling the breath.
Aakaashamavalokayan – indicates that fixing the sight on sky.

38 padbhyaaM dR^iDhamavasthaanaM kR^itvaa sa kapikuJNjaraH |
nikuJNchya karNau hanumaanutpatishhyan mahaabalaH |
vaanaraan vaanarashreshhTha idaM vachanamabraviit || 5-1-38
saH hanumaan = that Hanuma, kapikuJNjaraH = who is equal to an
elephant among monkeys, mahaabalaH = the mighty one,
vaanarashreshhThaH = the best among Vaanaraas, kR^itvaa = performed,
avasthaanam = standing, dR^iDham = firmly, padbhyaam = with his feet,
nikuJNchya = bending, karNau = ears, utpatishhyan = before flying,
abraviit = spoke, idam vachanam = these words, vaanaraan = to Vaanaraas.

That mighty Hanuma, equal to an elephant among monkeys and the best
among Vaanaraas, stood firmly with his legs, bent his ears and before
flying spoke these words to the Vaanaraas.

padbhyaaM dR^iDhamavasthaanaM kR^itvaa – indicates the Aasana.

While performing yoga accoreidng to the rules (mentioned above), there
will be vibrations in the body and as well sweat is generated. This is
indicated by the movement of the mountain and the movement of water on
the mountain because of Hanumas movement on the mountain.

The raajasik and tamasik gunas will vanish and the saatvik guna
illuminates (by perfoming yoga. This is indicated by the flow of
colorful water and breaking of rocks.

One can here sounds in the body (on performing yoga) – indicated by
the sounds of bhuutas.

Thus the above description indicates different stages involved in
yogaabhyasa.

Generation of heat in the body (due to yoga) is indicated by snake
bite etc.

yathaa raaghavanirmuktaH sharaH shvasanavikramaH |
gachchettadvadgamishhyaami laN^kaaM raavaNapaalitaam || 5-1-39
na hi drakshyaami yadi taaM laN^kaayaaM janakaatmajaam |
anenaiva hi vegena gamishhyaami suraalayam || 5-1-40
yadi vaa tridive siitaaM na drakshyaamyakR^itashramaH |
baddhvaa raakshasaraajaanamaanayishhyaami raavaNam || 5-1-41
sarvathaa kR^itakaaryo.ahameshhyaami saha siitayaa |
aanayishhyaami vaa laN^kaaM samutpaaTya saraavaNaam || 5-1-42

gamishhyaami = I will go, laN^kaaM = to Lanka, raavaNapaalitaam =
ruled by Ravana, yathaa = as, sharaH = an arrow, raaghava nirmuktaH =
released by Rama, gachchhet = will go, tadvat = like that, shvasana
vikramaH = with wind-like speed, yadi = if, na hi drakshyaami = I do
not see, taam janakaatmajaam = that daughter of Janaka, laN^kaayaam =
in Lanka, anena vegenaina hi = with the same speed, gamishhyaami = I
will go, suraalayam = to the abode of gods, yadi = if, na drakshyaami
vaa = I do not see, siitaam = Seetha, tridive = in heaven,
aanayishhyaami = I will get, raavaNam = Ravana, raakshasaraajaanam =
the king of raakshasaas, baddhvaa = tied up (in chains), akR^ita
shramaH = without effort, aham eshhyaami = I will return, sarvathaa =
in all events, kR^itakaaryaH = successfully, siitayaa saha = along
with Seetha, vaa = or, aanayishhyaami = I will get, laN^kaaM = Lanka,
saraavaNaam = along with Ravana, samutpaaTya = (after) uprooting (it).


"I will go to the city of Lanka, ruled by Ravana just like an arrow
released by Rama will go, with wind-like speed. If I do not see the
daughter of Janaka there, I will go with the same speed to the abode
of gods. If I do not see Seetha there in heaven, I will get Ravana the
king of raakshasaas tied up in chains without any effort. I will, in
all events, return successfully along with Seetha or I will get Lanka
along with Ravana after uprooting it."

43 & 44
evamuktvaa tu hanumaanvaanaraanvaanarottamaH || 5-1-43
utpapaataatha vegena vegavaanavichaarayan |
suparNamiva chaatmaanaM mene sa kapikuJNjaraH || 5-1-44

43-44. vaanarottamaH = the best among Vaanaraas, hanumaan = Hanuma,
uktvaa tu = spoke, evam = this, vaanaraan = to Vaanaraas, atha = (and)
after that, avichaarayan = without thinking (anything else), utpapaata
= flew up, vegena = with speed, mahaa vegavaan = (being) with lot of
vigor, saH kapikuJNjaraH = that great monkey, mene cha = also thought,
aatmaanam = himself, suparNamiva = as being equal to Garuda.
The best among Vaanaraas, Hanuma, spoke in this way to Vaanaraas and
then without thinking about anything else, flew up with lot of vigor.
That great monkey also thought himself equal to Garuda, the king of birds.
Before flying, hanuma said to his fellow vaanaras that he will go as
if like an arrow of Rama. This is the basic principle of Karma Yoga.
Hanuma is thinking that he is not the doer and it is for his pleasure.
Rama's arrow neither has natural power or speed – it is because of
Rama, arrow got its power and speed. That reaches the goal without
stopping anywhere. Hanuma described himself like such an arrow. He
indicates that he is powerless and it is because of Rama's sankalpa he
is performing this act. Thus he indicates us subordinate relationship
(bhagawath paarathanthryam) to Lord Rama.
The saadhakas who wish to be in the path of self and god realization
should follow this subordinate relationship to God.
Thinking thus, HANUMA flew up.

While he was flying up, due to that force, all trees on that mountain
flew away in all directions, drawing together all their branches.

While flying in the sky, he took along with him, because of the force
of his thighs, trees shining with flowers and with fattened lapwing birds.

The trees thus being held aloft by the speed of Hanuma's thighs,
followed him for a while just as relatives would follow their loved
ones embarking on a long journey.

After that, powerful trees sank into the salt ocean like mountains
sinking into ocean due to fear of Mahendra.

That Hanuma who was equal to a cloud, covered with flowers of various
kinds, shoots and buds, shone like a mountain with fireflies.

vimuktaastasya vegena muktvaa pushhpaaNi te drumaaH |
avashiiryanta salile nivR^ittaaH suhR^ido yathaa ||5-1-52
Those trees which were relased by Hanuma's speed, dropped flowers and
fell down in the water like friends going back after bidding farewell
to their dear one.

This is an interesting situation. Valmiki has related the trees
following Hanuma as:
1. relatives following their loved ones
2. soldiers following their king

In both the cases following some one is same. However, one is done
with affection and other is done due to compulsion. Those who follow
loved ones do it because they could not leave the other, and in second
case it is with a desire to get some thing in return or may as a duty.
Similarly, when the sages ( or Gurus) appears, common people follow
them either because of devotion or to get some benefits in return.

Here the word `tree' indicates BODY. `Flower' indicates intelligence
(Jnana). Trees can be lighter or heavier. Heavier trees travel smaller
distance and lighter trees travel a little more than heavier before
they fall down. Similarly, association with a sage (or Guru) will help
us to shed the desires. Those with plenty of desires follow them for a
shorter period than those with small desires. In either case, those
with desire would not follow them for longer.

Thus the above two verses indicates the changes that could happen with
normal persons due to association with great sages.

Hanuma with great speed crossed waves which were equal to Mount Meru

Then the water together with clouds which was driven up by the force

Then various whales, fishes, turtles and crocodiles were being seen
clearly in the sea just as bodies of humans would be seen when clothes
are removed.

Serpents living in the sea saw Hanuma flying in the sky and thought
that it was Garuda, the king of birds.

Hanuma's shadow which was ten yojanas wide and thirty yojanas long
appeared very beautiful on water.

Comment : "Yojana" is a measure of length in ancient India like the
modern mile. However its value does not seem to be a standard even
within India. Some consider it as six miles, some as eight miles and
some as two and half miles. Hence it is difficult to have an accurate
conversion from yojanas to miles.

This indicates that Hanuma has started his journey early in the
morning. It is because the size of shadow in the morning will be much
lengthier than the original size of the object.

"The ocean was developed by people born in Sri Rama's dynasty. That

Sri Rama's welfare."

by this ocean for your sake due to His great respect for you. O best

"The time to perform my duty is hastening me. The day too is passing.
A promise has also been given by me. I should not stand here in the

AT THE BEGINNING HANUMA HAS SAID THAT HE WILL GO LIKE AND ARROW FROM
RAMA'S BOW, WHICH WILL NOT STOP BEFORE REACHING THE TARGET. HENCE
HANUMA IS NOT SUPPOSED TO STOP IN THE MIDDLE. IF HE STOPS, HE CAN NOT
HIMSELF RELATE TO RAMA'S ARROW. HENCE, WITHOUT REST HE CONTINUED HIS
MISSION.

The courageous Hanuma saying thus, touched the mountain with His hand,
entered the sky and flew on with a smile.

That Hanuma was thus seen with great respect by the ocean and the
mountain, and also worshipped with suitable blessings.

After that leaving the mountain and the great ocean, and flying up far
into the clear sky, Hanuma followed the path of his father.

The son of Vayu obtained the speed to fly still higher into the sky
and seeing that mountain below, went in the clear sky which had no

Seeing Hanuma perform that very difficult second task (first one being
the flight over ocean), all Devas, Siddhas and great sages praised Him.

Devas and the thousand eyed Devendra who were there, became happy by
the task of that golden hued Mainaka.

The wise Devendra himself spoke these words through faltering tones
due to extreme happiness, to Mainaka, the best among mountains.

"O Mainaka, the king of mountains! I am very happy with you. O gentle
one! I am giving protection to you. Proceed according to your comfort."

To the dauntless Hanuma crossing hundred yojanas, who is fearless even
when there is reason to be afraid, a great help has been done by you.

This Vanara Hanuma is going for the benefit of Sri Rama, the son of

Thereafter, the best among mountains obtained great happiness on
seeing Devendra, the lord of Devas being happy.

Then that mountain with a given boon from Devendra stood still there.
Hanuma also leaped over that part of the ocean in an instant.

Thereafter, Devas together with Gandharvas, Siddhas and great sages spoke thus to Surasa, the mother of Nagas, equal to the Sun in brilliance.

"This glorious son of Vayu, going by the name of Hanuma is flying over the ocean. You obtain a horrible mountain like demonic appearance and make a face with fearful tusks, red-brown eyes and as vast as the sky, and create an obstacle to Him for an instant."

"We are desiring to find out if by His strength and also courage and intelligence He can win over you or obtain sorrow."

That Goddess Surasa, thus spoken to by Devas and also being respected by them, wearing a horrible disfigured appearance of a demon in the middle of the ocean which caused fear to all, and stopping Hanuma who was flying, spoke these words.

"O best among Vanaras! You have been given by Devas as my food. I will eat you. Enter inside my mouth."

Thus spoken to by Surasa, the glorious Hanuma, with a happy face and with folded hands, spoke these words to Surasa.
Previously, when Hanuma has won over Minaaka, Devas praised him as SRIMAN. Now, he is being called SRIMAN once again. After looking at Surasa, Hanuma stood happily without any worry. Here, the word SRIMAN, does not indicate any monetary possessions. Throughout the Sundara Kanda, wherever, the word SRIMAN appeared, it has been used with a specific philosophical meaning.
Hanuma has shown us the qualities that are required for leading a successful life and to get a place at His Lotus Feet. A saadhaka (one who he is in the path of self-realization) is required to accept the God as the only means for self- realization and should be determined to achieve it.. This is the first DUSHKARA KARMA for a saadhaka. As one proceeds in that direction, one gets favors, felicitations, praises, mundane benefits. If one accepts those and looks forward for more , he/she will not be able to proceed further. It is the second DUSHKARA KARMA , if one proceeds further without caring for these benefits.
Hanuma has come across a difficulty. He stood happily, without fear. To face the difficulties as His Wish and withstanding the obstacles with boldness is the OISHWRYAM and hence is eligible to be called as SRIMAN.

"The son of Dasaratha, with the name of Rama entered the forest of Dandaka together with His brother Lakshmana and wife Seetha."

"When that Sri Rama, with a bitter enmity towards Rakshasas, was diverted in another task, His famed wife Seetha had been taken away by Ravana."

"I am going for Rama's sake as a messenger to find Her presence. O subject of Sri Rama! You are suited to help Rama."

"Otherwise after seeing Seetha and informing that to Sri Rama who makes Seetha without troubles, I will obtain your mouth. I am promising truthfully to you."

Thus being spoken to by Hanuma, Surasa with power to take desired form, spoke thus : "No one can overcome me. This is my boon."

Mother of Nagas, Surasa, desiring to know the strength of Hanuma, spoke these words on seeing Him going away.
pravishya vadanaM me.adya gantavyaM vaanarottama |
vara eshha puraa datto mama dhaatreti satvaraa || 5-1-159
vyaadaaya vipulaM vaktraM sthitaa saa maaruteH puraH |
"O best among Vanaras! You are bound to go only after entering my mouth. This boon had been given to me long ago by Brahma." - speaking thus, with quickness she opened her wide mouth and stood before Hanuma.
evamuktaH surasayaa kruddho vaanarapuJNgavaH || 5-1-160
abraviitkuru vai vaktraM yena maaM vishhahishhyase |
Then Hanuma speaking thus to Surasa, became angry and became ten yojanas long and ten yojanas wide.

vara eshha puraa datto mamam dhraatreti satvaraa || 5-1-161
vyaadaaya vipulaM vaktraM sthitaa saa maruteH puraH |
Seeing Hanuma, who looked like a cloud, being ten yojanas long, Surasa also made her mouth twenty yojanas long.

chakaara surasaa chaasyaM viMshadyojanamaayatam |
Thereafter, Hanuma got angry and became thirty yojanas long. Surasa made her mouth forty yojanas high. The courageous Hanuma then became fifty yojanas high.

chakaara surasaa vaktraM chatvaariMshattathochchhritam |
babhuuva hanumaanviiraH paJNchaashadyojanochchhritaH || 5-1-164
Thereafter, Hanuma got angry and became thirty yojanas long. Surasa made her mouth forty yojanas high. The courageous Hanuma then became fifty yojanas high.

tathaiva hanumaanviiraH saptatiiyojinochchhritaH || 5-1-165
Surasa then made her mouth sixty yojanas long. The mighty Hanuma in the same fashion, became seventy yojanas high.

Surasa made her mouth eighty yojanas high. The mountain-like Hanuma then became ninety yojanas high.

The great wise Hanuma seeing that mouth with a long tongue which was horrible and equal to hell being opened by Surasa, greatly reduced His own body and became the size of a thumb.

antarikshe sthitaH
shriimaanidaM vachanamabraviit || 5-1-168
The glorious Hanuma with great speed, quickly entered Surasa's mouth and came out of it and standing in the sky spoke these words to Surasa.

gamishhye yatra vaidehii satyaM chaasiidvarastava ||5-1-169
"O daughter of Daksha! I indeed entered your mouth. My regards to you. I will now go where Seetha is. Your boon also came true."

abraviitsurasaa devii svena ruupeNa vaanaram || 5-1-170
Seeing that Vanara being released from her mouth like the moon from the mouth of Rahu, goddess Surasa spoke these words assuming her normal form.
arthasiddhyai harishreshhTha gachchha saumya yathaasukham |
samaanayasva vaidehiiM raaghaveNa mahaatmanaa || 5-1-171
" O gentle Hanuma! Go according to your comfort to achieve the desired task. Bring Seetha together with the great Sri Rama."

saadhu saadhviti bhuutaani prashshaMsustadaa harim || 5-1-172
Seeing that third very difficult task of Hanuma, all the creatures then praised Hanuma saying "Good! Good!".
To win over Surasa is the THIRD DUSHKARA KARMA while on the path of self realization. All human beings have to perform the karma (discharge the duties) as per scriptures. That will help to gain the blessings of God. If one goes against the scriptures, such karma will result in entanglement in mundane bonds. This is being indicated in this story of Surasa. SU= good; RASA= which gives Ananda (happiness). Surasa was sent by Devas. Our duties are given by scripture / Devas. If we perform our duties as the duty to God without worrying about the results and leaving all the results to Him, then it would help for self realization. Else, it would take us into the bondage of samsara.
Surasa is not demon. It has been sent by Devas and is in the disguise of demon. Similarly the duties that are given scriptures are not at all bad. Performing the duties with desire of results and thinking that it is mine and for me is Hanuma expanding his body as Surasa increased size of its mouth.
As our desires increases, the Karma increases and hence the bondage. Decreasing the desires is Hanuma decreasing his body. This is what an intelligent human being should do. One who know this truth, performs the duties without desire and as worship to God. Then such duty (or karma) will become Yagna.
YAGNAARTHAAT KARMANONYATRA LOKOYAM KARMA BANDHANAH
Those duties that are performed as service to God will not give bondage.
Inspite of getting into the mouth of surasa (with small body), Hanuma has not been swallowed. Further, Hanuma has not killed Surasa. He entered into its mouth and came out without being swallowed.
We need to perform the duties. However, we should not get entangled into them. At the same time, we should not forget our duty. We should discharge them as a process of self realization. Only such persons are called SRIMAN.

That Hanuma, equal to Garuda in speed, neared the ocean which is the abode of Varuna, entered the sky and went in His original path.

Hanuma went, like Garuda, in the sky served by clouds (or streams of water), served also by birds, tread by masters of music Tumbura and other Gandharvas, served by Airavata, borne by lions, elephants, tigers, birds and serpents, decorated by clear Vimanas moving with great speed, shone by fires with thunderous jolt equal to that of Vajra - the weapon of Devendra, decorated by people with good deeds, people with great luck who conquered the heavens, served by the God of fire carrying great quantities of oblations, shone by planets, stars, moon, sun and starlets, occupied by groups of great sages, Gandharvas, Nagas, Yakshas but unpopulated by humans, clear and all pervasive, served by the gandharva king Vishvaavasu, roamed by elephants of Devendra, the path of the moon and the sun, the auspicious one, a wide canopy of the earth constructed by Brahma, served in various ways by excellent courageous groups of Vidyadharas.

Hanuma , the son of Vayu, visible everywhere, obtained the sky without support, like the king of birds with long wings.

A demoness by the name of Simhika with the power to assume desired form, saw Hanuma flying, increased in size and thought thus in her mind.
adya diirGhasya kaalasya bhavishhyaamyahaamaashitaa |
idaM hi me mahatsattvaM chirasya vashamaagatam || 5-1-183 
"After a long time, this great animal came into my grasp. After long time, today I will enjoy my meal."
iti saMchintya manasaa chhaayaamasya samaakshipat |
chhaayaayaaM gR^ihyamaaNaayaaM chintayaamaasa vaanaraH || 5-1-184
Thinking thus in her mind, Simhika attracted His shadow. While the shadow was thus being grasped, Hanuma thought thus.

pratilomena vaatena mahaanauriva saagare || 5-1-185
"Like a great boat in the ocean with opposing winds, I am being pulled back forcefully, with disabled power."

dadarsha sa mahatsattvamutthitaM lavaNaambhasi || 5-1-186
After that, Hanuma looking sideways, upwards and downwards, saw a big animal raised up in the salty ocean.
chhaaytaddhR^ishhTvaa chintayaamaasa maarutirvikR^itaananam |
kapiraajena kathitaM sattvamadbhutadarshanam || 5-1-187
aagraahi mahaaviiryaM tadidaM naatra saMshayaH |
Hanuma saw that animal with a horrible face and thought : "This animal with a strange appearance, with great strength attracting shadow, is indeed the animal that had been told by Sugriva. There is no doubt in that."
sa taaM buddhvaarthatattvena siMhikaaM matimaankapiH |
vyavardhata mahaakaayaH pravR^ishhiiva valaahakaH || 5-1-188
That wise Hanuma recognizing that animal correctly as Simhika, increased His body greatly, like a cloud in rainy season.
tasya saa kaayamudviikshya vardhamaanaM mahaakapeH || 5-1-189
vaktraM prasaarayaamaasa paataaLaantarasannibham |
That Simhika seeing the growing body of the great monkey Hanuma, spread her mouth to be equal to the middle of Patala.
ghanaraajiiva garjantii vaanaraM sambhidravat || 5-1-190
sa dadarsha tatastasyaa vivR^itaM sumahanmukham |
kaayamaatraM cha medhaavii marmaaNi cha mahaakapiH || 5-1-191
Roaring like a dense cloud, she ran towards the Vanara. Then the wise Hanuma saw her opened very big mouth equal to His own body and also her internal organs.
sa tasyaa vivR^ite vaktre vajrasaMhananaH kapiH |
saMkshipya muhuraatmaanaM nishhpapaata mahaabalaH || 5-1-192
That Hanuma with great strength and with a body equal to a diamond, repeatedly contracted His body and fell into her opened mouth.
aasye tasyaa nimajjantaM dadR^ishuH siddhachaaraNaaH |
grasyamaanaM yathaa chandraM puurNaM parvaNi raahuNaa || 5-1-193
Siddhas and Charanas saw Hanuma sinking in her mouth, like the full moon on a full moon day being swallowed by Rahu.
tatastasyaa nakhaistiikNairmarmaaNyutkR^itya vaanaraH |
utpapaataatha vegena manaH saMpaatavikramaH || 5-1-194
Then Hanuma rend her internal organs with His sharp nails and after that flew up with a speed equal to that of thought.
taaM tu dR^ishhTvaa cha dhaR^ityaa cha daakshiNyena nipaatya cha |
sa kapipravaro vegaadvavR^idhe punaraatmavaan || 5-1-195
That wise Hanuma felling Simhika down with His vision, courage and ability, developed again by speed.

taaM hataaM vaanareNaashu patitaaM viikshya siMhikaam || 5-1-196
bhuutaanyaakaashachaariiNii tamuuchuH plavagottamam |
That Simhika with heart rend by Hanuma fell in water with sorrow. Seeing Simhika killed by Hanuma, creatures roaming in the sky spoke thus to that best among Vanaras.

saadhayaarthamabhipretamarishhTaM plavataaM vara |
"O best among Vanaras! A huge animal has been killed by you. A great task has been done. Perform the task dear to you auspiciously."
yasya tvetaani chatvaari vaanarendra yathaa tava || 5-1198dhR^itirdR^ishhTirmatirdaakshyaM sa karmasu na siidati |
"O best among Vanaras! Whoever has the four qualities of courage, vision, intellect and skill, all these four virtues like you, such a person will not fail in any task."
Killing Simhika is the fourth DUSHKARA KARMA.
One who is in the path of self realization should perform the duties prescribed by the scriptures and leave those that are not recommended. SIMHIKA = ONE WHICH TORTURES. We know what we should not do certain activities. Still we would like to do the same. We do not realize until we get the result of the same. Such kind of karma entangle us without giving any hint. This is Simhika pulling Hanuma just by looking at his shadow. Hence such karma should be left over with force rather than becomming slave to them.
Hanuma has not killed Surasa but killed Simhika. Both of them are in the form of woman. Hanuma killed one and left the other. First, he entered on to the mouth and came out without being hurt, bowed to her and got the blessings. Second, entered into her and killed. Thus we should perform duties that are prescribed and leave that are not prescribed.
Thus Hanuma has performed four DUSHKARA KARMAS while crossing the ocean.
1.      He has desired to cross the ocean without any support.
2.      Minaaka has offered him the felicitations. He refused to accept it as that would delay his mission.
3.      He has won over Surasa with intellect.
4.      He killed Simhika.
To completed the above four qualities are required. They are:
1.      Dhriti (Courage)
2.      Dhristi (Vision)
3.      Mati (Intellect)
4.      Daakshyam ( Skill)

Diverting all our duties towards self and god realization and not owning the results of such duties is essential quality. Courage and determination are required for such an act.
Having the same kind of balanced attitude in the times of success or failure, felicitations or punishments requires vision. One should have objective of getting a permanent happiness and work towards achieving the same and should not be satisfied with temporary happiness.
Intelligence of performing the prescribed duties and not performing the unprescribed duties is another essential quality (VIHITA KARMA AACHARANA).
Skill is required for going away from the unprescribed duties.
Thus Hanumas act of crossing the ocean indicates the requirements for leading successful life and achieving the self realization.
SUNDAY
sa taiH saMbhaavitaH puujyaH pratipannaprayojanaH || 5-1-199
jagaamaakaashamaavishya pannagaashanavatkapiH |
That Hanuma the respectable one, thus respected by them, entered the sky and went like the Garuda with a determined goal.
praaptabhuuyishhThapaarastu sarvataH pratilokayan || 5-1-200
yojanaanaaM shatasyaante vanaraajiM dadarsha saH |
Hanuma after almost reaching the other shore, looked in all directions and saw a series of trees at the end of his journey of hundred yojanas.
dadarsha cha patanneva vividhadrumabhuushhitam || 5-1-201
dviipaM shaakhaamR^igashreshhTho malayopavanaani cha |
The best among Vanaras, Hanuma, immediately after getting down also saw an island decorated by a variety of trees and also the forests in the region of Malaya.
saagaraM saagaraanuupaM saagaraanuupajaan drumaan || 5-1-202
saagarasya cha patniinaaM mukhaanyapi vilokayan |
sa mahaameghasaMkaashaM samiikshyaatmaanamaatmavaan || 5-1-203
nirundhantamivaakaashaM chakaara matimaan matim |
That Hanuma with controlled senses and with good thoughts looked at the ocean, the bay and the trees born in the bay, and also the faces of the wives of the ocean (rivers are considered wives of ocean), observed Himself to be equal in size to a great cloud as though stopping the sky, and thought thus.
Comment : It is considered an auspicious sign to be welcomed by married women. Hanuma seeing the wives of Sagara coming to meet their husband thus bodes well for Hanuma.
kaayavR^iddhiM pravegaM cha mama dR^ishhTvava raakshasaaH || 5-1-204
mayi kautuuhalaM kuryuriti mene mahaakapiH |
"After seeing my huge body and the speed, Rakshasas will become curious." - thus thought the great Hanuma.
tataH shariiraM saMkshipya tanmahiidharasannibham|| 5-1-205
punaH prakR^itimaapede viitamoha ivaatmavaan |
For that reason, Hanuma reduced His mountain-like body and obtained the nature of one who reached self-realization, free from infatuations.
tadruupamatisaMkshipya hanumaan prakR^itau sthitaH || 5-1-206
triin kramaaniva vikramya baliviiryaharo hariH |
Hanuma greatly reducing His size became normal in nature regaining His original form, like Vishnu who mitigated the strength of Bali by taking three strides.
sa chaarunaanaavidharuupadhaarii |
paraM samaasaadya samudratiiram |
parairashakyaH pratipannaruupaH |
samiikshitaatmaa samavekshitaarthaH || 5-1-207
with restored form, samavekshitaarthaH = (and became) with a decided mission.
Hanuma capable of assuming many different beautiful forms, who cannot be defeated by enemies, obtained the other side of ocean and being cognizant of Himself restored His own form and became with a decided mission.

vichitrakuuTe nipapaata kuuTe |
saketakoddaalakanaaLikere |
mahaabhrakuuTapratimo mahaatmaa || 5-1-208
After that great one who looked like a huge mass of clouds, alighted on the mountain peak of Lamba with wonderful lower peaks, abundant with various things and filled with Ketaka, Uddalaka and coconut trees.

samiikshya laN^kaaM girivaryamuurdhni |
kapistu tasminnipapaata parvate |
vidhuuya ruupaM vyathayanmRR^igadvijaan || 5-1-209
After that Hanuma for His part obtained the ocean shore, observed the city of Lanka from the top of the mountain, leaving His original form, tormenting animals and birds, alighted on that mountain.

sa saagaraM daanavapannagaayutaM |
balena vikramya mahormimaalinam |
nipatya tiire cha mahodadhestadaa |
dadarsha laN^kaamamaraavatiimiva || 5-1-210
Thus Hanuma has obtained his original form as if a self realized person has realized the self, and saw the the lanka which is like Amaravathi..

Thus, this is the 1st chapter in Sundara Kanda of Valmiki Ramayana.
